In 2026, Divinity: Original Sin 2 still hands players one of the most flexible combat sandboxes in the CRPG genre. After all the class picks and character setup, the real question is which skill school deserves those precious memory slots. It's a bigger choice than it looks. Some schools look flashy but fall off. Others feel clunky until they suddenly snap the game in half. This ranking runs from worst to best, based on damage, control, survivability, and how much nonsense each school lets a player get away with in the Definitive Edition.

10. Hydrosophist – Great Healing, Shaky Late Game

Hydrosophist is the go-to school for healing and cleansing. It has the most robust individual and mass heal spells in the game. Early on, that is a lifesaver because potions and defensive cooldowns are scarce. A party without a Hydrosophist will feel every scratch.

The problem arrives later. Defensive value drops off hard. By Act 3, the best use for water magic is freezing or shocking enemies, and other schools just do that better. It's not bad, but it doesn't scale into the godlike tier.

9. Huntsman – Deadly Arrows, Fragile Body

Huntsman is the ranged physical school. It focuses on bleeding, critical damage, and evasive movement. A well-built archer can melt enemies from high ground before they ever get close. Still, Huntsman pushes a player into a glass cannon role. Most defensive tools are about running away or not being hit, not surviving a real brawl. It can be excellent, but it wants a very specific playstyle.

8. Scoundrel – Nasty Crits, Dirtier Tricks

Scoundrel feels like Huntsman with knives and more personal space invasion. It gives dagger users invisibility, sneaky movement, and some truly dishonorable control options. The damage ceiling is higher than Huntsman because Scoundrel loves critical attacks. On top of that, a Scoundrel can incapacitate an enemy before they even understand what happened. The price is risk. You have to stand close and trust your tricks.

7. Pyrokinetic – Burn Everything, Including Friends

Pyrokinetic does exactly what the name suggests. It deals high fire damage, spreads burning status effects, and turns every oil puddle into a death trap. If a player wants pure, unapologetic destruction, this is the school. Fire does not care about allies, though. A careless Pyrokinetic can wipe their own party as easily as the enemy. That lack of discrimination keeps it out of the top tier.

6. Warfare – Simple, Reliable, Physical

Warfare is the old reliable melee school. It's balanced, straightforward, and hard to ruin a build with. A Warfare specialist can knock enemies down with Battering Ram or Battle Stomp, then beat them into the dirt. It's not flashy, but it works from start to finish. The only real downside is pure physical damage, which struggles against heavily armored opponents without a partner school.

5. Necromancer – The Immortal Brawler

Necromancer is the perfect partner for Warfare. It makes a melee fighter extremely hard to kill while also boosting physical damage. Skills like Living on the Edge stop death, and Death Wish turns low health into a weapon. A tanky damage-dealer with Necromancer becomes a walking problem that refuses to die.

4. Aerothurge – Move the Battlefield

Aerothurge is all about flexibility. Teleport alone lets a player rearrange fights, drop enemies into danger, or pull allies out of trouble. Electric damage can stun with Shock status, and several skills manipulate enemy movement and line of sight. It doesn't have the raw nuke power of Pyrokinetic, but it has far more creative tools.

3. Geomancer – Offense and Defense Together

Geomancer offers a rare balance for a spellcaster. It deals both physical and magic damage, so it slots into almost any party. Poison status effects are great for undead characters. Oil-producing skills can make the battlefield miserable for enemies, though players need to be careful with their own movement. It's a versatile, self-contained school.

2. Summoning – Your Personal Demon Army

Summoning was so strong with Lone Wolf that it broke the game before Definitive Edition nerfs. Even now, reaching ten points in Summoning lets a player conjure a massive Incarnate demon that can carry Act 1 almost by itself. Totems are also surprisingly useful because they change based on the surface. The Lone Wolf Summoner is still one of the most oppressive builds in 2026.

1. Polymorph – The Game-Breaking School

Polymorph sits at the top because it simply lets players do illegal things. Skills like Skin Graft and Apotheosis unlock combos that reset cooldowns and remove source point limits. A Lone Wolf who branches into Polymorph after Summoning or Warfare/Necromancer becomes a cheese machine. It takes some setup and a brain to use, but once those combos click, the game folds.
