When I returned to Gears Tactics in 2026, I was reminded why this tactical spin-off still rewards experimentation. Dozens of skills, armor pieces, and playstyles can drastically change how a mission unfolds, and after finishing the campaign I found myself rebuilding every class for maximum efficiency. The virtual skill table on GearsTactics.com is still a superb planning tool, letting you test capped-out builds before you even boot up the game. After running squad after squad against the hardest Locust threats, I have settled on one powerful build for each class.

🛡 Vanguard: The Grub-Killing Berserker

For my Vanguard, I want an Incredible Hulk-style powerhouse: the angrier the battlefield gets, the stronger the unit becomes. This build is not about playing it safe. It is about deliberately turning incoming damage into a weapon and then roaring back at the enemy.

The centerpiece is Intimidate, a feral shout that knocks enemies out of overwatch and forces them to stumble. That alone can push a Locust into friendly overwatch zones or proximity mines, but the bigger prize is the 30 percent bonus damage all enemies receive afterward. Pair that with Rage Shot, and the Vanguard turns into a devastating finisher. A fully upgraded Rage Shot attacks with a damage bonus equal to 200 percent of your missing health, so intentionally taking hits becomes a risky but extremely valuable strategy in boss fights.

Bayonet Charge may seem simple because every Vanguard has it, but I have used it constantly for repositioning, clearing enemies, and setting up aggressive buffs. Why simply walk into danger when you can charge into it and come out stronger?

  • Recommended Skills: Intimidate, Rage Shot, Bayonet Charge

  • Recommended Equipment Mods: I prioritize anything that boosts melee damage, health, or cooldown reduction to keep the berserker loop alive.

🧨 Scout: The Sneaky Explosives Expert

Scouts are among the most overpowered classes in Gears Tactics, and my favorite way to play them is as speedy saboteurs. The goal is explosive optimization: more proximity mines, shorter cooldowns, and bigger blast damage. I build out the Recon and Commando portions of the skill tree for maximum effect. In a twist for this franchise, I barely even need the shotgun.

Sprint covers an immense amount of ground, which is vital when dealing with emergence holes or large groups. Tossing a grenade into an e-hole earns back two Action Points with the proper build, and that extra momentum is perfect for escaping or setting up the next explosive play. If I cannot escape a spawn with Sprint, Cloak is my next best friend. It is usually a great option anyway, because vanishing after planting mines lets the enemy walk right into disaster.

  • Recommended Skills: Sapper, Proximity Mine, Sprint, Cloak

  • Recommended Equipment Mods: Utility Belt, Blast Zone

🩹 Support: The Dedicated Healer

Support is one of the tactically weaker classes, but it excels when the squad needs a dedicated anchor. If I want to hand out Action Points, keep everyone healed, and reduce incoming damage, this is the build I choose. It is especially useful against the dangerous Imulsion-enhanced enemies that explode when killed.

Group Therapy, Recovery Patch, and Stim are the quickest ways to deliver healing from almost anywhere on the map. Group Therapy targets all allies for a set heal, Recovery Patch heals a teammate once per turn, and Stim provides an instantaneous flat heal. Once Stim is maxed out, I can even use it to revive downed players. Painkiller is the passive glue: healed units take 30 percent less damage, so I can activate it before risky maneuvers to keep the team closer to full health.

Can a Support carry the squad? Not directly. But when everyone survives the mission, the answer certainly feels like yes.

  • Recommended Skills: Group Therapy, Recovery Patch, Stim, Painkiller

  • Recommended Equipment Mods: Potential, Expertise

🎯 Sniper: The Formidable Long-Range Glass Cannon

Sniper rifles deal tremendous damage in any shooter, and Gears Tactics is no exception. My Sniper build focuses on critical hit chance and damage. This may be the most tactical class in the game because I have to activate abilities in the correct order to unlock the biggest payoff.

The combo is beautiful. Bullseye guarantees a critical hit on the next attack. That critical hit activates Lucky Streak, which gives a 20 percent bonus to critical strike chance after landing another critical. Critical hits can also trigger Spree, restoring some Action Points for continued pressure. Add Headhunter, a flat 3 percent damage buff for every kill, and the Sniper becomes a snowballing long-range executioner.

Why use a shotgun up close when you can remove the threat before it ever reaches your squad?

  • Recommended Skills: Spree, Lucky Streak, Headhunter, Bullseye

  • Recommended Equipment Mods: Sleek, Optics

💣 Heavy: The Almost Immovable, Constantly Firing Object

The Heavy rewards me for staying in cover and continually firing. This class can be a massive single-target damage dealer, especially on missions that keep me centrally located. My Heavy build is all about turning ammunition into absolute destruction.

Ultra Shot is the final skill in the Artillery section of the Heavy tree. It lets the Heavy unload every shot in the magazine until the enemy is destroyed or the ammo runs out, making it perfect for deleting tanky Locusts like Butchers. It cannot be used on bosses, so I plan those encounters carefully. Explosive Shot turns any enemy into a weapon: if I kill an enemy with it, the target explodes and deals up to 500 damage in a five-meter radius. Few things feel better than turning a crowded Locust push into a chain reaction.

  • Recommended Skills: Ultra Shot, Explosive Shot

  • Recommended Equipment Mods: Magazine and explosive-damage upgrades whenever possible

🤖 Jack: The Bonus Buffbot Who Can Turn Enemies Into Allies

Jack is the only class added after the initial launch and is playable in the Jacked campaign mode. My favorite Jack build revolves around Hijack, which lets him take over an enemy unit and use it as an ally. For fans of mathematics, the equation is simple: the enemy loses a team member and I gain one. Those new allies can become flankers, distractions, damage sponges, or whatever the mission demands.

The Utility tree is just as valuable. Jack can place auras on allies that radiate buffs in a radius, altering overwatch damage, accuracy, crit chance, and even healing. If my squad is grouped up for a last stand, support auras can completely change the outcome. Capsule skills like Sonic Capsule, Shock Capsule, and Toxic Capsule also give me disruptive options for interfering with enemies before Hijack fully comes online. Coordinated Assault and Support Aura round out the build by turning Jack into the team\u2019s ultimate force multiplier.

  • Recommended Skills: Hijack, Sonic Capsule, Shock Capsule, Toxic Capsule, Coordinated Assault, Support Aura

  • Recommended Equipment Mods: Aura-enhancing and cooldown-reduction mods

Each class can feel dramatically different when built around the right skills. My advice in 2026 is to experiment with these builds, find the one that matches your command style, and then push Gears Tactics to its limit.
